 Awo Iyami Female Percussionists  Awo Iyami Female Percussionists are here to serve the purpose their name states. The Yoruba term meaning, "Mysteries Of Our Mother's", is exactly what we present to you. A show that consists of aincient drumming, old and original folklore/ tales, and songs from the African and African American Diaspora are all that they use to preserve these teachings from the ancient female ancestors. This group also serves to reinforce the knowledge that women were and are the first drummers, before teaching it to their sons and having it forbidden to them.  Through us, our ancestors can drum again, they can dance again, they can sing again, their stories can be told again! Awo Iyami's other causes we serve are to work with inner city females that are struggling wth school, identity, self-esteem, knowledge of self, and lack of arts/ resources in their neighborhoods or lives in general. Through dance, drum, song, and folklore we are able to uplift and encourage these girls to grow and persist while teaching others so that the growing never ends with one generation but carries on infinitely.
